It’s been more than 18 months that i’ve moved to Brussels, heart of Europe (rumor has it). I didn’t came here for the FUN-tastic weather, nor for the language i can’t understand (remember « dank u » for thank you -this is probably only funny in French actually), nor for the pleasure of a 19th moving, and 5th country in 4 years. Nope, just a project, from a Studio that you probably never heard about. Nwave Digital. Now currently on what is a nice project, one of the only one like that in Europe, in stereo (or in « 3D » if you want). It’s called « Around the World in 50 years », I can’t talk about it obviously but well. I might be able to share why I like being in here on this project.

After the destruction of the Studio in Luxembourg (issue with the North American team, world war between the studio, and a nice project called « 9″ going back to America, leaving freakin talented artists behind…. pffff…). I asked myself… « what now? »…. I’m a PR & media guy.. would i want to go back to london? dublin? tryin’ the US? stay in France (that idea actually went for like only 15minutes during the ads of a football game gotta confess). No. I’ll have the opportunity, given by the tip from a friend (who was also animator in luxembourg) about this studio in Brussels.

In less than 10 days, got 2 mails « hi it’s me vince » « when can you come to visit? » « tomorrow » « fine » « hi, there…! » « thanks for coming » « no problem, i was just yesterday in paris anyway just for a day » « can you start in 2 months » « yes ». ahah.. longer than how i started in luxembourg (a week legend tells), but nonetheless impressive.

So here i was, coming to Belgium. The project is a long feature, called « around the world in 50 years », talking about a turtle as the main character :) I would need a lot of time to come properly in the production pipeline, this is only the 2nd long feature of the studio (1st one being the first ever film made only for 3D, it was « Fly me to the moon » who came out last summer), so of course, not everything’s perfect, but that’s also why it’s challenging on a daily basis, we’re creating a film, we’re happy about that (or at least most of us), it’s not always easy regarding the time we have, but that’s why I also love those projects, for the pression, the moments spent thinking about how we can arrange stuff and the facft that i’m surrounded by people with talent…

Yes… The crew!! got to confess that they had needed some time to not see me as a proper « foe », but a real allie, someone that is here to help them, and not only to scream at them like the cliché of production guy would say. That’s why i’m sometimes invited to drinks outside the studio, and that they come to see me with the issue they are having before going to see my 2 bosses. This is where, sometimes, my philosophy « If you’ve got a problem, solve it, then when solved i’ll spread the word we had an issue » is taking all of his sense :)

So well, between barbecues, evening’s at the studio, this project is going forward, and yeah. I’m fuckin’ proud to see right now, in Cannes, a 12m long poster of our movie in front of the Hilton. I’m fucking proud of being part of it and trying to help as much as possible. We’re not pixar, dreamworks, bluesky -the lads of ice age-, but we’re making a movie that WILL come out (those who have known like me a project that is unwillingly have a full stop will know the feeling).

 

So well, here i am, happy in Brussels, living my life on a daily basis. « Don’t worry, life is easy » as i always say. And it’s this. Every project, we’re learning, trying to go foreward… and yes, you can call me care bear, but i have faith in my job and in this studio. Can’t talk about the movie, just taking snaps that are currently available on the web but well, maybe you’ll think about me if you ever go and see it when it comes out. As you can see on the banner, Studio canal will distribute it, which is actually a very good news :)

 

 

Right now, « Awakening » would be the appropriate word for what my life is. And currently waiting to see what the other projects are to keep moving forward and keep learning ( so no, i will not become a professionnal photographer as the last couple of weeks discussion were inviting me to. Not enough talent, and need a daily basis work with human interaction).

 

Might go and see also a « 4D » version of a 13minutes long attraction of the movie in Europa Park (Germany) this summer, if anyone cares to join…

 

And obviously, this is just the fun times, I can’t show really the studio, because of all the sketches, color key and stuff on the walls or on the screens :/

    @tybo ahah, mais avec #hadopi, torrent est le salut de l’humanité de tte facon non? mais bon, quand « fly me to the moon » est sortit, j’avoue que pr le plaisir, on regardait le nb de sseds sur les torrents ^^ et pr un film uniquement sorti en 3D, ils ont réussit à trouver une version 2D russe à faire tourner, c’est dire!

    @msiou ouais.. enfin faut savoir ce qu’on entends par « premiere », ds quel pays toussa, mais a priori, je pourrais rien faire pr toi ^^

    @patrice tu as intéret à amener toute ta familia qd il sortira xD

    @steph oui oui, en fait, étant en relief/3D/stereoscopie, il est prévu pr sortir « que » sur grand écran au début, ptetre un dvd en anaglyphique un jour j’imagine (tu sais,les lunettes rouge et verte qui te donne l’impression d’avoir direct mal au crâne en les mettant…), aucune idée de ce côté là, mais oui, diffusion ds les cinema équipés 3D, je pense que c’est le projet, comme toujours avec Nwave :)

    @djé ouaiiiiiiiiissss.. j’ai pris les photos à l’arrache entre midi, déjà Topher m’en veut de pas avoir mis sa tête (alors qu’il a qd meme un shot super cool qd il tire sur l’écran de Matthias damn it!)
    et j’irai pas jusqu’a indispensable, j’essaye d’aider au maximum de mes capacités va :p
    et pr l’épi, c’est juste pr mon bien personnel à moi à l’intérieur, de montrer que je suis pas le seul à en avoir un ahahahah xD

    @quentin ahah :) j’y suis venu par hasard un peu, mais j’aime mon métier en effet!! le post a un mois en effet, parce que je ne peux poster grd chose en rapport à cette prod ci, et ma précedente ( »9″ de Shane acker) n’est pas encore sortie dc pareil, impossible de poster des photos où l’on voit des designs ou écrans ^^

    J’ai vu la bande annonce de « 9″ il y a quelques semaines, j’ai vraiment envie de le voir !

    Et ça donne envie encore plus envie de travailler dans ce milieu !

    Ca consiste en quoi « Production Assistant » (ouép, j’ai fouillé ton linkedin :D ) ?

    @quentin il est là pr ca allons ^^ ca dépend du projet. Sur 9, j’étais aussi production assistant, uniquement Animation, comprendre j’étais avec Shane (le réal) et Joe (DirAnim) pr faire en sorte que l’animation prenne le bon chemin, s’ils voulaient un chgt de timing, d’objet, de perso, d’attitudes etc… le tout en étant sûr que les décors et autres persos étaient prêt à temps pr que mes graphistes ne se tournent pas les pouces…
    Sur ATW, la même, mais avec tous les départements, superviser les futurs pbs, les liens entre les différentes étapes pr que personne ne perdent de temps et fassent qqe chose qui sera validé par Ben (le réal) au final :)

    Je fais des études de communication (après des études d’informatique) et j’avais jamais pensé à ce genre de boulot ! Mais bon, les places doivent être dures à trouver !

    Sinon très bons goûts musicaux et t’as fait les Ardentes y a trois ans (j’observe tout) ce qui est très bien :D

    @quentin ahah, pas de vacances depuis 2 ans, mais l’idée j’aime bcp :p
    pareil, j’ai un master d’info com au départ, puis séjour en angleterre et en irlande, coup de bol que d’avoir commencé sur 9 au lux en fait, depuis j’aime tellement que j’ai continué ds le métier plutot que de retourner aux relations presses toussa :)
    et les ardentes, c’était l’année derniere en fait, et de tte facon, avec mon Compte flickr, tu peux voir que je fais pas mal de choses/concert/soirée/sorties de tte facon (et j’assume, mais j’ai juste pas le temps de bloguer souvent c tt)

    Je pensais que c’était le bracelet d’il y a trois ans :)

    Moi aussi je l’ai déjà fouillé. Y’a tout pleins de concerts dis donc ^^ Tu as bosser avec Shane Acker, c’est énorme je trouve ! Vive luxanimation :)

    N’empêche en tant que production assistant, tu dois avoir une sacré pression quand même O_o

    J’ai regarder pas mal de tes articles (y compris le lien avec la vidéo youtube des séquences d’acting de nine) et je vois que tu t’éclate pas mal ! En tant que jeune studio, nous avons un petit aperçu de ce que cela peut donner une chouette ambiance de travail ! C’est un monde que si tu y rentre, tu n’auras pas envie d’en sortir, ça c’est sûr !

    Sounds like an interesting project! And I have to admit, I’d love to see the movie allthough I’m sure it’s not ment for people my age ;)
    I hope you don’t mind I used one of your pictures on my blog! I also printed it and it’s hanging on my wall, everytime I see it, it takes me back to that wonderful concert! Good times :)
